James W. Pennebaker

Geboren: March 02, 1950 – Midland, Texas, United States

James W. Pennebaker is an American social psychologist whose work centers on expressive writing, trauma, health, and the psychology of language. He helped pioneer research showing how writing about emotional experience can affect well-being, and is known for Opening Up and The Secret Life of Pronouns, as well as co-developing LIWC.

Biografie & Werdegang des Autors

James W. Pennebaker grew up in Midland, Texas, in a setting he has described as formative for a future social psychologist. After beginning college at the University of Arizona, he transferred with Ruth, who later became his wife, to Eckerd College, where psychology became his intellectual home; he earned his B.A. with honors in 1972 and completed a Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Texas at Austin in 1977. His academic career took him first to the University of Virginia and then to Southern Methodist University before he returned to UT Austin in 1997, later serving as department chair and, eventually, professor emeritus. The major turning point came in the early 1980s, when research on physical symptoms and secrecy led him to a simple but far-reaching question: what happens when people put private upheaval into words?
