Dolly Alderton is a British journalist, author, and screenwriter who writes about friendship, dating, heartbreak, and adulthood. Her memoir Everything I Know About Love won the 2018 National Book Award for Autobiography, spent 65 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and inspired a BBC adaptation; Ghosts and Good Material were also bestsellers.
Raised in a London suburb, Dolly Alderton wanted to write from an early age, editing school and student publications and developing the mix of humor, confession and observation that would later define her work. At the University of Exeter she began in drama before switching to English, then completed a journalism master’s at City University London. Her route into a writing life was not immediate: after graduation she spent months doing unpaid magazine placements before a decisive break came when her online recaps of Made in Chelsea led Monkey Kingdom to hire her as a story producer. Work in television development, script assisting on Fresh Meat and directing online content for Fresh Meat and Peep Show gave her a practical education in structure, dialogue and character before she moved into full-time freelance writing in 2015.
