Daron Acemoglu

Daron Acemoglu is a Turkish-American economist and author whose work focuses on political economy, institutions, inequality, technology, and growth. He coauthored Why Nations Fail, The Narrow Corridor, and Power and Progress. A longtime MIT professor, he received the 2024 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for research on institutions and prosperity.

Daron Acemoglu was born in Istanbul on September 3, 1967, into a family of Armenian heritage, and his academic path quickly became international. He earned a BA from the University of York in 1989, completed a master’s degree at the London School of Economics in 1990, and received his PhD there in 1992. The following year he joined MIT, where he built the career that made him one of the most influential economists of his generation and, in 2024, a Nobel laureate.
