Biografie & Werdegang des Autors

Abraham Verghese’s life and work were shaped early by migration, medicine, and upheaval. Born in Addis Ababa in 1955, the second of three sons of Indian parents recruited to teach in Ethiopia, he began medical training there before civil unrest disrupted that path. He then spent time in the United States working as a hospital orderly, an experience that placed him on the most humble rung of hospital life before he completed his medical degree at Madras Medical College, went on to residency in Johnson City, Tennessee, and later trained in infectious diseases at Boston University. The decisive turning point came when he returned to Tennessee and found himself caring for patients in the early rural AIDS epidemic, an experience that altered both his understanding of medicine and the direction of his writing life.
