Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese military strategist, general, and philosopher traditionally credited with writing The Art of War, a foundational treatise on strategy, leadership, and warfare. Though his biography is partly legendary, the book has been translated worldwide and remains deeply influential in military thought, politics, and business.

Biography & Author's Journey

Sun Tzu is the name traditionally attached to one of the most influential military thinkers in history, though many details of his life remain uncertain. He is generally placed in the late Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, most often in the sixth or early fifth century BCE, and is commonly associated with the state of Wu. Later historical tradition presents him as a general and strategist who rose to prominence under King Helü of Wu. One of the best-known anecdotes about him describes his training of palace attendants as soldiers, a story used to illustrate the discipline, clarity, and authority that later readers came to see as central to his method. Whether every detail is historical or partly legendary, the turning point in his reputation was clear: he became known not simply as a battlefield commander, but as a thinker who could turn military action into a coherent philosophy of decision-making.
