John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and grew up in Southaven, Mississippi, after a childhood shaped by frequent family moves. He earned a degree in accounting from Mississippi State University in 1977 and a law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1981, then built a legal career in criminal defense and personal injury while also serving in the Mississippi legislature during the 1980s. The major turning point came after he observed a rape trial in 1984; the testimony stayed with him and became the spark for A Time to Kill. That first novel, published in 1989, had a modest start, but The Firm, released in 1991, transformed him from practicing lawyer into a full-time novelist.
