Howard Schultz is an American businessman and author known for shaping Starbucks into a global coffeehouse company. Serving as CEO and chairman in multiple periods, he helped expand the brand from a small Seattle chain to thousands of stores worldwide. His books include Pour Your Heart Into It and From the Ground Up.
Howard Schultz emerged from a very different world than the one he would later help define. He grew up in Brooklyn’s public housing, and the insecurity he saw at home shaped his lifelong preoccupation with dignity at work. A first-generation college student, he graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1975. The decisive early turn in his career came after he joined Starbucks in 1982 and then visited Milan, where he was struck by the social life of Italian coffee bars. When Starbucks’ founders resisted that model, Schultz left, started Il Giornale in 1985, and in 1987 used it to acquire Starbucks, becoming the company’s modern-day founder and chief architect.
