Edward D. Hess is a business scholar and professor emeritus at UVA Darden whose work centers on growth, innovation, learning cultures, and high-performance organizations. He wrote Hyper-Learning, Learn or Die, Humility Is the New Smart, and Smart Growth, and has authored 13 books, 150-plus articles, and more than 60 Darden cases.
Edward D. Hess’s path began in a small town in rural Georgia in the 1950s, where he grew up as the son of a father who had fled Nazi Germany and a mother from Massachusetts. Books and football became early forces in his life: his mother cultivated a deep reading habit, and a high-school football coach helped launch him toward college and even his first published article. At the University of Florida, he moved from an unsuccessful start in pre-med into math and educational psychology, graduated magna cum laude, and then pivoted again by entering the University of Virginia for law and later earning an LL.M. from New York University.
