David Sumpter built his career at the intersection of mathematics, behavior and public communication. Originally from London, he took a PhD in mathematics at Manchester, held research positions at Oxford and Cambridge, and then moved to Sweden, where he became professor of applied mathematics at Uppsala University. His early academic reputation came from modeling how groups organize themselves, from bee colonies, ants and fish schools to segregation, social influence and other human systems.
