Dan Simmons is an American novelist whose work spans science fiction, horror, fantasy, and historical fiction. He is best known for Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, and The Terror; his fiction has won major honors including the Hugo Award and World Fantasy Award, establishing him as a prominent genre writer.
Daniel Joseph Simmons was born in Peoria, Illinois, on April 4, 1948, and grew up in a succession of Midwestern towns, an unsettled background that helped form both his imagination and his lifelong habit of storytelling. He studied English at Wabash College, where he absorbed writers such as Chaucer and Keats, earned recognition for creative work, and later completed a master’s degree in education at Washington University in St. Louis in 1971. Before literature became his full-time profession, he spent 18 years in elementary education in Missouri, Buffalo, and Colorado, eventually helping build Longmont’s APEX program for advanced students and gaining recognition as a Colorado Teacher of the Year finalist. That long teaching career gave his fiction a strong sense of audience, structure, and intellectual range. ((https://www.wabash.edu/magazine/1998/spring/features/simmons.htm))
