Born: July 20, 1933 – Providence, Rhode Island, United States
Cormac McCarthy was an American novelist and playwright known for spare, biblical prose exploring violence, morality, and the American frontier. His notable works include Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and The Road, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He is widely regarded as a major contemporary writer.
Cormac McCarthy was born Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr. in Providence, Rhode Island, on July 20, 1933, and grew up primarily in Knoxville, Tennessee, a landscape that shaped his earliest fiction. He attended the University of Tennessee intermittently, served in the U.S. Air Force, and began writing seriously in early adulthood, winning student literary recognition before leaving college without a degree. His first novels, including The Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, Child of God, and Suttree, established him as a writer of unusual force: austere, biblical in cadence, and deeply attentive to violence, poverty, and the physical world. A major turning point came in the 1980s, when he shifted from Southern settings to the U.S.-Mexico borderlands and produced Blood Meridian, the novel many critics came to regard as his masterpiece. Another came in 1992, when All the Pretty Horses brought him broad readership, followed by No Country for Old Men and The Road, which won the Pulitzer Prize and reached a still larger audience.
