Ben Carson is an American neurosurgeon, memoirist, and public figure whose books on medicine, faith, self-discipline, and conservative politics include Gifted Hands and Think Big. Known for pioneering pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and reached broad audiences through autobiographical and inspirational writing.
Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. was born in Detroit in 1951 and raised in poverty by a single mother who pushed him and his brother toward books, discipline, and faith. That insistence on reading became the decisive force in his life: after struggling academically as a child, he went on to earn a psychology degree from Yale and an M.D. from the University of Michigan before training in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. At 33, he became the youngest major division director in Johns Hopkins history, and his national reputation was established by pioneering pediatric neurosurgical work, including the 1987 separation of twins conjoined at the back of the head.
