Barry Z. Posner is an American leadership scholar and educator whose work focuses on leadership, management, and organizational behavior. He is best known, with James M. Kouzes, for The Leadership Challenge, a widely used leadership classic that has sold millions of copies and been translated into multiple languages, shaping leadership education worldwide.
Barry Z. Posner built his career at the intersection of scholarship, teaching, and practice. Trained first in political science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, then in public administration at Ohio State, and finally in organizational behavior and administrative theory at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he joined Santa Clara University in 1976 and became closely associated with the school’s evolving leadership tradition. A decisive turning point came as Santa Clara’s Jesuit emphasis on values met the practical demands of Silicon Valley. Posner’s own interests shifted from organizational culture and managerial values toward the broader question that would define his life’s work: how people mobilize others to make extraordinary things happen. He later served twelve years as dean of the Leavey School of Business while continuing to teach and write.
