Born: June 12, 1980 – Brighton, England, United Kingdom
Adam Kay is a British writer, comedian, and former junior doctor whose work focuses on medicine, the NHS, and darkly comic memoir. He is best known for This Is Going to Hurt, as well as ’Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas and children’s science books. His books have sold millions and been translated widely.
Adam Kay was born in Brighton into a Polish Jewish family of medics and grew up in London. He trained in medicine at Imperial College London, but even during those years he was already moving toward performance and writing as well as clinical work. While at medical school he co-founded the musical comedy act Amateur Transplants, and the viral success of its London Underground parody gave him an early public audience. After qualifying, he worked as a junior doctor in the NHS, largely in obstetrics and gynaecology, absorbing the punishing hours, institutional absurdities and emotional volatility that would later shape his voice on the page and on stage.
