Adam Alter is an Australian-American psychologist, New York University Stern School of Business professor, and author of Drunk Tank Pink and Irresistible. His work focuses on behavioral science, judgment and decision-making, consumer behavior, and technology’s addictive pull, translating academic research into widely read books and public-facing commentary.
Adam Alter’s work sits at the intersection of psychology, business, and everyday behavior, but his path to that territory was not linear. Born in South Africa and raised from childhood in Australia, he came to higher education without a fixed vocational script. At the University of New South Wales, he moved through actuarial science, law, and psychology before recognizing that the first two paths did not fit him. That period of uncertainty became an early turning point: the search for a more meaningful intellectual home led him toward questions of judgment, decision-making, and the hidden forces that shape human behavior. He later earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology at Princeton, where he deepened the research foundation that would define both his academic and public writing.
