英伟达的名字起源于公司初创时期。当时创始人们将所有的规划文件都保存在一个名为“NV”的文件夹中，意为“Next Version”（下一版本）。在注册公司时，他们翻阅拉丁语词典，找到了“invidia”一词，其含义为“仰慕”或“嫉妒”，于是便有了现在的名字。
“黄氏定律”是英伟达创始人黄仁勋为公司设定的研发准则，即要求产品每六个月更新一次，且性能必须翻倍。相比之下，著名的“摩尔定律”预测的性能翻倍周期是十八个月。英伟达通过这种极速迭代的节奏，在硬件领域实现了对传统周期的“超车”。
2006年推出 CUDA 时，英伟达决定让所有 GPU 都支持通用计算，这显著增加了每颗芯片的硬件成本，但当时几乎没有用户需要这种功能。在长达近十年的时间里，CUDA 投入巨大却几乎没有收入，导致股价低迷并遭到华尔街的强烈质疑。直到2012年后，深度学习的兴起才证明了这一超前布局的价值。
