Located south of the English settlements along the Nottoway and Meherrin Rivers, these groups were distinct from the coastal Powhatan Confederacy. While they lived in Virginia, they were part of a larger linguistic family that included the Haudenosaunee in New York and the Cherokee to the west, maintaining a unique cultural identity during a period of rapid colonial expansion.
The Nottoway and Meherrin shared a core linguistic DNA with the famous Iroquois Confederacy, or Haudenosaunee, despite being physically separated by Algonquian and Siouan-speaking groups. The Nottoway, who referred to themselves as the Cheroenhaka, viewed this linguistic identity as a vital part of their heritage.
