A repair attempt is a term coined by researcher John Gottman to describe small, often fragile gestures used to lower the emotional temperature during a conflict. These actions are designed to stop an argument from spiraling out of control before it causes permanent damage. By using these strategies, individuals can settle their nervous systems and return to a state where they can actually communicate effectively rather than remaining entrenched and defensive.

In one clinical example, a therapist used a rubber parrot as a nod to the Monty Python 'Dead Parrot' sketch to help a couple break their cycle of loud and defensive arguing. When the argument began to spiral, smacking the parrot on the floor served as a ridiculous ritual that shattered the tension. This absurd act allowed the couple to dissolve into laughter, regulating their nervous systems and saving the conversation from a destructive path.

When people become entrenched and defensive during a disagreement, they often lose the original point of the discussion under a mountain of hurt. Regulating the nervous system through a repair attempt helps individuals move out of a high-tension state. Once the emotional temperature is lowered, the participants are no longer unrecognizable in their anger and can engage in a productive conversation to address the underlying issues like financial stress or chores.
