When you experience a racing heart or shallow breath in a social environment, your nervous system has mistaken social uncertainty for a physical threat.     Physical symptoms such as a drumming heart, shallow breathing, or a flushed neck occur because your body is treating a social mixer or coffee shop encounter like a predator in the wild. This mismatch between your ancient survival mechanism and modern life creates a jarring sensation. Recognizing these sensations as a physiological process allows you to shift your perspective from feeling like something is wrong with you to managing a sensitive alarm system.

    Social anxiety is one of the most common mental health experiences globally, affecting roughly thirteen percent of the population at some point in their lives. Despite how common it is, the experience often feels isolating, making people feel as though they are the only ones struggling with social uncertainty. Realizing that millions of others share this physiological experience can help reduce the isolation often felt during work mixers or public gatherings.
