Before his work, predicting the final temperature of mixed substances involved guesswork, but Richmann provided the rigorous mathematical framework needed to accurately calculate how heat transfer occurs between bodies of water and other materials.

    Richmann’s Law provides the first general equation for calorimetric calculations, allowing scientists to predict exactly where temperatures will land after mixing. While the research initially focused on fluids, the law applies to any two bodies in thermal contact, such as a hot glass meeting cold water. By using this heat transfer equation, one can calculate the final equilibrium state reached when different substances are stirred together or combined.
