Reactive Abuse: When Your Reaction Becomes Their Weapon

Reactive Abuse: When Your Reaction Becomes Their Weapon最佳语录

    “

Abuse is about power and control. If they can be perfectly charming in public or with their boss, but turn into a 'monster' only with you, they are choosing their targets; they are in control of their timing, which means they are responsible for their actions.

    常见问题

Reactive abuse occurs when a person who is being constantly provoked or emotionally attacked finally snaps and reacts by yelling or pushing back. The script suggests that "reactive defense" is a more accurate term because the person reacting is not the actual abuser. The original aggressor often uses this one moment of visible frustration to claim they are the real victim, effectively "starting the recording" only when the other person loses their cool.

DARVO is an acronym for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It is a blueprint used to avoid accountability. First, the person denies their behavior occurred. Next, they attack the credibility of the person bringing up the issue, often calling them "too sensitive" or "unstable." Finally, they reverse the roles so that they become the victim of the other person's "triggers," often resulting in the actual victim feeling forced to apologize.

Blaming a "trigger" is often a way to externalize blame and avoid responsibility for emotional dysregulation. While factors like alcohol abuse or mental illness can explain why someone struggles with impulsiveness, they do not cause abuse. The script notes that if a person can control their behavior around a boss or in public but becomes a "monster" at home, they are choosing their targets and are responsible for their actions.

The first step is to name the behavior, such as identifying a tactic as DARVO, which helps create emotional distance. Grounding yourself in facts is also essential; this can include keeping a private journal, saving text messages, or recording voice memos to verify your own memory. Finally, setting firm boundaries by refusing to over-explain yourself can prevent an aggressor from using your words as further ammunition.
