Instead of searching for a specific "smoking gun" molecule like oxygen or methane, which can be produced by non-living things like volcanoes, scientists are looking for an organizational principle. This method uses statistical patterns to identify how molecules are distributed. In living systems, amino acids are more varied and evenly spread out than in non-living chemistry, while fatty acids show the opposite trend. This statistical signature is so robust that it has even been detected in millions-of-years-old dinosaur eggshells.
Researchers suggest looking for "clumps" of planets with similar chemical characteristics that are physically near each other. If life spreads between star systems—a concept known as panspermia—it would likely terraform those planets to be more habitable, creating a massive statistical correlation between a planet's location and its atmosphere. This "agnostic" approach doesn't require knowing what aliens breathe; it simply looks for patterns in a population of planets that natural formation cannot explain.

"Post-persons" are hypothetical beings who possess advanced moral reasoning and always act according to the best moral principles.
