The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25, known by the NATO reporting name Foxbat, was a Soviet aircraft that became a Cold War bogeyman for Western intelligence. Defense planners who saw satellite photos of its massive wings and intakes assumed the Soviets had created a super fighter capable of outmaneuvering any American aircraft.
The MiG-25 Foxbat was capable of reaching speeds of Mach 3.2, which is more than three times the speed of sound. In 1971, Israeli radar operators observed the aircraft screaming across the sky at these speeds, appearing completely untouchable to existing defense systems. Because it could fly so fast and at such high altitudes, contemporary missiles often could not reach their detonation altitude before the Foxbat was already miles away from the target area.
The mystery and fear surrounding the MiG-25 Foxbat significantly altered the course of aviation history. Because U.S. defense planners were terrified that the Foxbat was a superior super fighter, the United States poured immense resources into developing the F-15 Eagle specifically to counter its perceived capabilities. This reaction was based on the assumption that the Soviet aircraft could outrun and outmaneuver anything in the American arsenal, leading to a major leap in Western fighter technology.
