Die Pla ist das flache Inselinnere Mallorcas, das geografisch und kulturell einen starken Kontrast zu den touristischen Küstenregionen bildet. Da es dort keine Sandstrände gibt, blieb die Region vom massiven Bauboom der 1960er-Jahre weitgehend verschont, wodurch traditionelle Strukturen und die landwirtschaftliche Identität konserviert wurden. Ihre charakteristische rote Farbe erhält sie durch das "Pebre bord", ein spezielles lokales Paprikapulver. Ursprünglich entstand die Wurst aus der Notwendigkeit heraus, das Fleisch der herbstlichen Hausschlachtung ("Matança") für das ganze Jahr haltbar zu machen, wobei die feuchte Inselluft den Reifeprozess begünstigt.

Lena: Sag mal, Jackson, ich hab neulich mit ein paar Freunden zusammengesessen und wir haben über Mallorca gesprochen. Und da kam sofort dieses klassische Bild: Ballermann, Party, Massentourismus. Aber wenn man sich mal tiefer mit der Insel beschäftigt, merkt man ja schnell, dass das eigentlich nur ein winziger Bruchteil ist. Das Entscheidende ist doch, dass die Insel geografisch und kulturell so viel mehr Ebenen hat, die man auf den ersten Blick gar nicht sieht.

Jackson: Ja, genau das mein ich. Das ist halt das typische Klischee, das sich über Jahrzehnte festgesetzt hat. Aber unterm Strich ist Mallorca ja fast wie ein kleiner Kontinent für sich. Du hast da diese krasse Mischung aus dem Tramuntana-Gebirge im Norden und den völlig anderen Strukturen im Inselinneren oder an der Ostküste. Das Spannende daran ist ja, warum die Insel überhaupt so geworden ist, wie sie heute ist – also dieser Mix aus jahrhundertealter Tradition und diesem extremen Fokus auf den Tourismus.

Lena: Stimmt, da hast du recht. Man fragt sich ja schon, wie diese beiden Welten überhaupt nebeneinander existieren können, ohne dass die eine die andere komplett schluckt. Ich hab da neulich mal was dazu gelesen, wie sehr die Landschaft eigentlich die Kultur der Leute dort geprägt hat, lange bevor der erste Flieger gelandet ist.
