Il sistema GPS è una prova pratica quotidiana della relatività generale. I satelliti orbitano lontano dalla massa terrestre, dove la gravità è minore, e di conseguenza il tempo lassù scorre leggermente più veloce rispetto a quello sulla superficie del pianeta. Se gli ingegneri non correggessero gli orologi atomici dei satelliti tenendo conto di questa distorsione temporale, la localizzazione del tuo telefono sbaglierebbe di chilometri dopo un solo giorno.
Le onde gravitazionali sono increspature nel tessuto dello spaziotempo causate da eventi cosmici violenti, come la collisione tra due buchi neri. Queste vibrazioni si propagano nell'universo come i cerchi in uno stagno. Sono state rilevate per la prima volta nel 2015, confermando che lo spaziotempo non è un vuoto statico ma un'entità dinamica capace di vibrare e trasportare energia.
La teoria di Newton presentava un limite logico: presupponeva che la gravità agisse istantaneamente a distanza. Einstein comprese che nulla, nemmeno la gravità, può viaggiare più veloce della luce. Inoltre, le leggi di Newton non riuscivano a spiegare l'anomalia dell'orbita di Mercurio; solo la relatività generale ha chiarito che tale discrepanza era dovuta alla forte curvatura dello spaziotempo causata dalla vicinanza del Sole.
Sì, la luce non viaggia sempre in linea retta. Quando passa vicino a un oggetto dotato di grande massa, come una stella o una pulsar, segue la curvatura dello spazio creato da quella massa. Questo fenomeno è noto come lente gravitazionale ed è stato misurato con precisione osservando come la luce delle stelle o delle pulsar venga deviata di piccoli angoli (come 0,04 gradi) quando transita vicino a corpi massicci.
Spazio e tempo non sono entità separate, ma formano un unico tessuto chiamato spaziotempo. La presenza di una massa, come una stella, deforma questo tessuto creando una sorta di "conca". Questa deformazione non cambia solo la geometria dello spazio, ma agisce come un freno per il tempo: più la massa è grande e la curvatura è profonda, più il tempo scorre lentamente nelle sue vicinanze.
