Слово происходит от латинского inquisitio, что означает «расследование» или «розыск». Изначально это был чисто юридический инструмент, заимствованный из древнеримского права. Как церковный институт инквизиция оформилась в XII–XIII веках как попытка систематизировать борьбу с ересью. До этого расправы над инакомыслящими часто носили хаотичный характер и совершались толпой, а создание трибуналов должно было перевести процесс в правовое русло с проведением официального следствия.
Да, преемственность этого института сохраняется в структуре католической церкви, хотя его функции и названия радикально изменились. В 1908 году инквизиция была переименована в Священную канцелярию, позже — в Конгрегацию доктрины веры, а с 2022 года она называется Дикастерией доктрины веры. В России предпринимались попытки создать аналогичный институт, но они не имели такого масштаба, как в Европе. Петр I в 1721 году ввел должности протоинквизиторов и провинциал-инквизиторов, однако их функции были скорее фискальными: они следили за порядком внутри духовенства, боролись с коррупцией и контролировали сбор налогов. Эта система не прижилась и была ликвидирована вскоре после смерти императора, так как функции сыска в России традиционно выполнялись государственным аппаратом.
