Oft entsteht für den Ghoster erst dann ein „emotionaler Freiraum“, wenn der Kontakt abgebrochen ist und der Erwartungsdruck nachlässt. Sobald die Angst vor Verbindlichkeit sinkt, kommen positive Erinnerungen hoch und die Person sucht erneut Bestätigung. In vielen Fällen steckt dahinter auch reiner Egoismus oder „Breadcrumbing“, um zu testen, ob man das Gegenüber noch immer emotional unter Kontrolle hat.

    Diese Begriffe beschreiben manipulative Verhaltensweisen in der digitalen Kommunikation. Beim Breadcrumbing wirft die Person dem anderen lediglich „Brotkrumen“ in Form von unverbindlichen Nachrichten oder Likes hin, um Aufmerksamkeit zu erhalten, ohne jedoch Verantwortung für eine echte Bindung zu übernehmen. Orbiting bedeutet, dass der Ghoster sich zwar aus dem direkten Kontakt zurückzieht, aber wie ein Satellit um das digitale Leben des Opfers kreist, indem er beispielsweise ständig Social-Media-Stories anschaut, ohne jemals direkt zu kommunizieren.

    Das liegt an der menschlichen Biologie. Unser Gehirn verarbeitet soziale Ablehnung ähnlich wie körperlichen Schmerz. Wenn ein Ghoster nach einer Phase der Funkstille wieder schreibt, löst dies im Belohnungssystem einen massiven Dopamin-Ausstoß aus – vergleichbar mit einem Süchtigen auf Entzug. Dieses Phänomen der „intermittierenden Verstärkung“, bei der Belohnungen unvorhersehbar kommen, macht es psychologisch extrem schwer, sich dem Kontakt zu entziehen, da man ständig auf den nächsten „Jackpot“ hofft.

    Experten raten dazu, erst einmal mindestens 24 Stunden gar nichts zu tun, um aus dem emotionalen Alarmmodus herauszukommen. In dieser Zeit sollte man einen Realitätscheck machen und sich die Fakten des bisherigen Verhaltens vor Augen führen. Wenn man sich für eine Antwort entscheidet, sollte man klare Grenzen in Form von Ich-Botschaften setzen und die Verletzung offen ansprechen. Zeigt das Gegenüber daraufhin keine echte Reue oder Verantwortungsübernahme, ist ein endgültiger Kontaktabbruch oft der einzige Weg zum Selbstschutz.

    Nein, Ghosting ist primär ein Zeichen von emotionaler Unreife und mangelndem Verantwortungsgefühl aufseiten des Ghosters. Es ist oft ein Ausdruck von Bindungsangst oder einer totalen Überforderung mit Konflikten. Auch wenn Betroffene oft die Schuld bei sich suchen, um das Gefühl der Ohnmacht zu bekämpfen, sagen Experten deutlich, dass dieses Verhalten fast ausschließlich die Defizite des Ghosters widerspiegelt und nichts über die Liebenswürdigkeit oder den Wert des Opfers aussagt.
