Explore the French Revolution from the 1789 debt crisis to the Terror. Learn how King Louis XVI, the Third Estate, and the guillotine reshaped history.

The French Revolution shows us this incredibly clear playbook of how movements can go from valid grievances to total self-destruction when they lose the ability to compromise.
A dramatic timeline of the French Revolution's key events, focusing on the momentum and pivotal moments from the storming of the Bastille through the Reign of Terror.

The French debt crisis was fueled by massive spending to support the American Revolution and the incredibly extra lifestyle of the royal court at Versailles. Combined with several years of terrible harvests and droughts, bread prices skyrocketed, leading to widespread starvation and riots. While King Louis XVI attempted to fix the debt, the nobility refused to pay taxes, creating a social meltdown where the Third Estate was no longer willing to be ignored by the elite.
In 1789, the Third Estate represented approximately ninety-eight percent of the French population. This group consisted of basically everyone who was not a priest or a noble. Despite their massive numbers, they were consistently outvoted by the tiny elite classes. This systemic inequality became a primary driver of the revolution as the people grew tired of being silenced while facing economic ruin and starvation.
King Louis XVI was sitting in Versailles during a time of rancid vibes and extreme social tension. Although he tried to address the country's bankruptcy, he was not built for the pressure of the era. He faced resistance from the nobility regarding tax reforms and failed to listen to the starving population. This lack of leadership contributed to the domino effect that led the society to go from a fragile peace to the eventual use of the guillotine.
