In the Paleolithic era, being kicked out of a tribe was a death sentence, so the brain developed a high-sensitivity alarm system to prevent social exile.     While many people mistake the inner critic for a drive for excellence or a moral compass, research suggests it is actually a reflex from our older neural circuitry designed to scan for danger. It is not a judge of character but a primitive tool used to ensure you remain part of the group. Understanding that this voice is a survival mechanism rather than a cold, hard truth can help you reframe how you view your internal self-criticism.
