As AI shifts from a tool to a colleague, the boundary between human and machine is blurring. Explore how to navigate this new era of partnership.

The real challenge isn't just learning how to use the software—it’s learning how to live with a 'co-intelligence' that doesn't follow the rules of any technology we’ve seen before.
An audio lesson about the book Co-Intelligence, covering its key ideas and takeaways.

The "Jagged Frontier" refers to the uneven and unpredictable capabilities of Large Language Models. While AI can perform complex creative tasks or pass difficult exams with ease, it may simultaneously fail at simple mechanical precision or basic logic. This creates a "jagged" boundary where users must constantly experiment to discover which tasks the AI can handle brilliantly and which ones it will struggle with or "hallucinate" an answer for.
These are two distinct strategies for integrating AI into professional work. "Centaurs" maintain a clear division of labor, switching back and forth between human tasks and AI tasks based on who is better suited for the job. In contrast, "Cyborgs" operate through a more integrated approach, intertwining their workflow with the AI in real-time to augment their capabilities, often blurring the line between human effort and machine output.
While hallucinations—moments where the AI confidently states something factually incorrect—are often seen as a technical flaw, they are also the source of the machine's creativity. Because the AI is not just a database but a system that reimagines concepts and draws novel links between ideas, the same mechanism that causes it to "make things up" also allows it to generate inventive solutions and original perspectives that a human might miss.
The "Homework Apocalypse" refers to the reality that traditional take-home assignments, like essays or problem sets, can now be completed instantly by AI, making them ineffective as a measure of learning. However, this shift offers an opportunity to solve "Bloom’s Two Sigma Problem" by using AI as a personalized, low-cost tutor. This allows for a "flipped classroom" model where students learn basics from an AI coach and use class time for deep, human-led discussions.
To navigate the shift toward co-intelligence, Mollick suggests four guidelines: always invite AI to the table to see where it can help; never take your hands off the wheel by maintaining human oversight to catch errors; anthropomorphize the AI by giving it specific personas to improve its performance; and always assume that the AI you are using today is the worst version you will ever encounter, as the technology is improving at an exponential rate.
