Cliff Weitzman, the founder of Speechify, views scaling as a volume game rather than a game of luck. He believes in taking more shots at the goal and emphasizes that the volume of work is a core principle for success. By applying to twenty-six colleges or testing multiple strategies, he calculates that high volume increases the probability of a win, even when individual odds are low.
While volume is essential, Weitzman is also obsessed with leverage. In his 20VC interview, he explains that true scaling occurs when your output is your work multiplied by the leverage you have. He transitioned from simply working harder to building tools like Speechify, which uses deep learning to process ten million books worth of words annually, providing massive leverage over traditional methods.
Speechify was born out of Cliff Weitzman’s personal struggle with dyslexia. Rather than just trying to work harder at reading, he built a deep learning model to solve the problem. This tool allowed him to turn a personal challenge into a scalable solution that reads millions of words, demonstrating how high-volume output and technical leverage can solve complex personal and professional hurdles.
