宋平曾整整九年担任周恩来的政治秘书，被形容为周总理的“影子”。从1938年到1947年，他在重庆红岩村、南京等地协助周恩来工作，亲笔起草过大量发往延安的电报，并直接向毛泽东汇报工作。这段在高层核心磨炼的经历，使他深受周恩来严于律己、公道正派风格的影响，这种克勤克俭、低调务实的老派革命者修养贯穿了他的一生。
宋平在经济领域资历深厚，曾长期在国家计委工作，参与编制了“一五”计划，并在60年代负责西北局的三线建设。80年代担任国家计委主任期间，他主持编制了“六五”和“七五”计划，在计划经济向市场经济转型的关键期起到了“稳定器”的作用。他不仅关注工业布局，还极具前瞻性地提出治理大城市拥堵要借鉴三线经验，并大力支持国家科技攻关规划。
退休后的宋平保持着极度的克制与低调，深居简出且从不干预现任领导层的决策。他将晚年精力投入到慈善和教育事业中，发起了旨在帮助农村孩子改变命运的“圆梦班”项目，并动员退休老同志发挥余热。在个人生活上，他对自己和家人要求近乎严苛，坚持不滥用职权，甚至要求子女在出行和就业上不得享受任何特殊待遇，始终保持清廉自守的本色。
