    The 2014 solitude study revealed a startling trend in human behavior regarding boredom and self-reflection. Researchers found that when left alone in a room for just twelve minutes with no distractions, many participants preferred physical pain over silence. Specifically, two-thirds of men and one-quarter of women chose to administer an electric shock to themselves rather than remain alone with their own thoughts, highlighting our deep-seated discomfort with being still.

    Our frequent reach for a phone during moments of 'nothing' is often a reflex caused by a nervous system wired to prioritize constant stimulation over presence. We have become conditioned to fill every micro-second with scrolls, texts, or podcasts. This behavior suggests that many people have confused being stimulated with being alive, leading to a skin-crawling restlessness whenever things get quiet or when we are faced with idle time.

    While many people run away from silence, idle time is actually essential for fostering creativity and emotional well-being. Overcoming the fear of solitude allows you to move past the need for constant digital distraction and retrain your nervous system. By embracing the art of sitting in silence, you can transition from a state of constant stimulation to one of true presence, which serves as the secret sauce for your mental and emotional health.
