AMIは、サーバーの構築に必要なOS、アプリケーション、設定ファイルなどがすべてパッケージ化された「金型」や「レシピ」のようなものです。これを利用することで、OSのインストールや複雑な初期設定を毎回行うことなく、昨日まで動いていたものと全く同じサーバー環境を一瞬で、かつ大量に再現することが可能になります。
AMIに割り当てられるIDは各リージョンごとにユニークであるため、作成したリージョン以外でそのまま直接使用することはできません。ただし、AMIには「コピー」機能が備わっているため、別のリージョンへコピーを作成することで、異なる場所でも同じ設定のサーバーを立ち上げることが可能になります。
主流の「EBS-backed」はネットワーク経由で接続されるディスクで、インスタンスを停止してもデータが保持されるため、長期保存や安定運用に向いています。一方、「Instance Store-backed」はホストコンピュータに直接接続されているため非常に高速ですが、インスタンスを終了するとデータが消えてしまう「揮発性」という特徴があります。そのため、用途に応じて使い分けることが重要です。
現在は「HVM」が一般的であり、推奨されています。HVMはハードウェアをそのまま仮想化するタイプで、OSに手を加える必要がなく、最新の高性能なネットワークやGPUの能力をフルに引き出すことができます。かつて主流だったPVは、古い世代のインスタンスでしか利用できなくなってきているため、新規に環境を構築する場合はHVMを選択するのが最適です。
「Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager (DLM)」というツールを活用することで、管理を自動化できます。DLMを使えば、特定のタグが付いたAMIに対して「毎日決まった時間に作成し、一定期間が経過したら自動的に削除する」といったスケジュールを設定できるため、手動での管理ミスや不要なストレージ課金を防ぐことができます。
