Ce surnom provient du projet d'urbanisme volontaire lancé au 19e siècle par le comte de Dunraven. Souhaitant créer un idéal esthétique pour ses employés, il a redessiné le village en s'inspirant du style anglais. Le résultat est un ensemble pittoresque de chaumières aux toits de paille ronds et aux murs blancs immaculés, qui côtoient des ruines médiévales et un manoir imposant, donnant au lieu une atmosphère magique et préservée.
Le manoir est ce qu'on appelle une "Calendar House" (maison calendrier). Son architecture symbolise le passage du temps avec 365 fenêtres pour les jours de l'année, 52 cheminées pour les semaines, 7 colonnes pour les jours de la semaine et 4 tours pour représenter les saisons. Construit dans un style Tudor Revival, ce bâtiment de luxe illustre la volonté de l'aristocratie victorienne de dominer symboliquement à la fois l'espace et le temps.
Le monastère des Trinitaires, dont le bâtiment abrite aujourd'hui l'église Holy Trinity Abbey, était l'unique établissement de cet ordre en Irlande. Leur mission spécifique consistait à collecter des fonds pour payer les rançons et racheter les chrétiens capturés par des pirates ou faits prisonniers pendant les Croisades. Adare servait ainsi de centre névralgique pour des négociations de crise internationales.
Le village a connu une transformation majeure, passant d'une communauté rurale de 600 habitants en 1929 à environ 1 300 aujourd'hui. Alors que le train était autrefois le principal moyen d'accès, le village est devenu un carrefour routier important et une destination de luxe internationale. Malgré cette modernisation et l'arrivée de technologies comme le Wi-Fi haut débit dans les chaumières, Adare a réussi à préserver son patrimoine historique grâce à des restaurations constantes et à une volonté de maintenir son identité visuelle unique.
