McConnell's pattern of putting party above country is clear: he refused to work with Obama on economic recovery during the financial crisis, openly stated his top priority was making Obama a one-term president, and stole a Supreme Court seat by refusing to fill Scalia's vacancy. The Republican Party has abandoned conservative principles in favor of pursuing consistent power. This shift gives them a tactical advantage - they can choose whatever path is most politically beneficial at any moment, unburdened by principles, prior positions, or morality. Republican politicians have trained their voters to root for the jersey regardless of what happens on the field.
Democrats don't have this freedom. We're governed by ideological commitments to which our voters hold us accountable. Obama felt obligated to pass healthcare reform because he campaigned on it, even knowing it would hurt his political prospects. Republican voters, by contrast, care primarily about winning.
