Despite pressure from Republican chairman Henry Raymond to send peace commissioners to Davis with reunion as the sole condition, Lincoln refused to abandon emancipation. Thomas's forces bloodied Hood at Franklin before delivering a crushing defeat at Nashville December 16, virtually destroying the Army of Tennessee. Despite fundamental disagreement, Confederate commissioners Stephens, Hunter, and Campbell were appointed.
