Men grab their neck robustly or cover this area while adjusting ties or collars, while women touch it more frequently but delicately with fingertips. Under stress, people massage the side of the neck near the pulse point to stimulate the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to major organs. This stimulation releases acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that signals the heart's atrioventricular node to lower heart rate. A visible and sometimes audible hard swallow is a spontaneous reaction to something unsavory, dangerous, or extremely stressful-a reliable distress indicator. Hand steepling-placing fingertips together, spreading them, and arching hands like a church steeple-is a universal confidence display. While steepling signals confidence, it doesn't guarantee accuracy-someone can be confidently wrong but still convince others through this powerful gesture. We use legs for locomotion, protection, establishing dominance, and providing stability for nervous children. Though often overlooked in nonverbal communication studies, legs convey everything from elegance to nervousness to joy. As survival tools that enable escape, legs can honestly reveal our feelings about others. We display territory through leg positioning-the wider apart our feet, the stronger the territorial claim. Stance breadth reveals character: military and police personnel typically stand with feet farther apart than accountants or engineers. A wide stance communicates confidence while subconsciously claiming territory. Most people prefer conversing from a slightly angled position rather than directly face-to-face. This natural approach, even used by children meeting for the first time, tends to receive better reception. Business interactions last longer when people stand at slight angles, and during conflict, angling away helps diffuse negative emotions.
