Mobile technology and internet access can transform lives in developing nations while making it harder for dictators to control communication without damaging their economy. Foreign aid could promote freedom by funding nationwide wireless internet and mobile phone access, creating a win-win situation that improves commerce while enabling citizens to organize.
Elections alone don't guarantee meaningful change. Leaders at risk often hold fraudulent elections to create an illusion of fairness while actually strengthening their control. True elections must follow expanded freedom rather than precede it. Despite seemingly insurmountable global problems, the solution to poverty and oppression is clear: freedom. People with rights to speak, write, and gather to share ideas typically enjoy personal and property security along with contentment. Politics follows natural laws that cannot be altered, but we can find better paths within these fundamental rules.
