The imago Dei directly confronts such dehumanization, declaring that dignity belongs equally to all people. This radical equality found practical expression in the Sabbath commandment, which mandated rest not just for property owners but for servants, foreigners, and even animals - a striking departure from contemporary cultural norms. The prohibition against idolatry serves a similar function, protecting human dignity by preventing us from worshiping lesser images when we ourselves are God's true image-bearers, designed to reflect his glory.
Our individual dignity connects intimately to identity through God's unfolding story. Christianity doesn't seek to erase personal identity but rather to redeem and transform it through proper relationship with God. We understand ourselves through a particular narrative-one authored by God's Spirit and revealed through Scripture. This view looks backward to God's original design in Eden and forward to ultimate renewal in Christ, placing our personal stories within the grand arc of God's redemptive plan. Cultural, ethnic, and personal distinctives aren't eliminated but rather find their proper place and fullest expression within this divine framework.
This countercultural message of universal human worth has been the church's consistent stance since ancient times, though tragically not always perfectly practiced. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently proclaimed, "there are no gradations in the image of God"-everyone from "treble white to bass black" possesses equal dignity and significance. The Memphis sanitation workers' 1968 strike, with its powerful "I Am a Man" signs, powerfully illustrated how racism fundamentally denies this God-given dignity. Their protest highlighted how systems of oppression often mask themselves in economic or social justifications while actually attacking human worth at its core.

Ethnic identity is good-God determined our birth, parents, and cultural context-but it's not the ultimate thing. Like instruments in an orchestra, each culture contributes its unique voice to the symphony of God's creation, yet none alone can produce the full masterpiece.
Cultural diversity was God's intention even before sin entered the world. The cultural mandate in Genesis 1:28 to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it" wasn't about exploitation but cultivation-engaging creation's resources to bless humanity and glorify God. This mandate encompasses art, music, language, cuisine, and countless other expressions of human creativity. Human creativity participates in God's supreme creativity, creating genuine beauty even in our fallen world. We see this in the diversity of architectural styles, from Gothic cathedrals to Japanese temples, each reflecting different aspects of beauty and human ingenuity.
God's vision for humanity is revealed in Isaiah 61-62, where the anointed one (whom Jesus identifies as himself) is clothed with salvation's garments not for his own sake but for ours. The imagery shifts from people wearing beautiful crowns to people becoming "a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD." This powerful metaphor shows that redeemed humanity will be the sign of God's kingship, displaying royal worth and dignity. This transformation isn't merely individual but communal, affecting entire societies and cultures. The beauty described here is both moral and aesthetic - righteousness and justice adorning communities like precious jewels.
This beauty will never fade because the Lord makes and keeps us beautiful. Unlike human-made beauty that deteriorates, divine beauty increases over time as communities grow in grace and truth. The vision culminates in Revelation's picture of the redeemed as a radiant bride-a balm for our souls amidst our current divisions. This final image presents a multicultural multitude united in perfect harmony, where diversity enhances rather than threatens unity, and differences are celebrated rather than merely tolerated.

From Eden to Babel: How We Lost Our Beautiful Community
Jake, a white conservative Republican church deacon, posted an image of President Obama trampling the Bill of Rights. A Black woman from his church responded by calling out "racist bigots" who are church officers. Rather than responding defensively, Jake initiated a face-to-face conversation that became transformative. For the first time, he listened to how his posts appeared from her perspective, which led him to engage with other church members whose political views differed from his. While maintaining his conservative principles, Jake developed humility about his political views, recognizing that faithful Christians could hold different positions.
This modern example illustrates an ancient problem: humanity was created to image God as beautiful community, but sin ruptured our communion. From Eden to our present polarization across ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, and political lines, fragmentation tells humanity's story.
The Tower of Babel narrative (Genesis 11:1-9) reveals the roots of our ghettoization. Though humanity had one language, their unity was one of rebellion against God's command to fill the earth. Instead, they settled in Shinar to build a city and tower to "make a name for ourselves." Their technological achievement-attempting to build a ziggurat reaching heaven-was so puny that God had to "come down" to see it. In judgment and mercy, God confused their language, forcing them to disperse across the earth.
This divine action created "ghettos" where we no longer trust each other, yet remain in solidarity against God through isolated communities. We now derive our dignity from these isolated communities-ethnic, social, cultural, economic, and academic ghettos-which we love to a fault. When confronted with cultural differences, we instinctively distrust and reject what we don't understand, blind to how thoroughly our understanding of being human is shaped by our particular ghetto.
Racism exemplifies our ghettoization. In the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), of nearly 4,900 ministers, only about 50 are Black, 40 Hispanic, 480 Asian, and 2 First Nations-no non-white minority comprises even 10% of ministers. This isn't accidental but stems from theological and ecclesial practices that exclude people of color. Artist Doris Salcedo's work "Shibboleth" at the Tate Modern-a crack in the museum floor-symbolizes how we police boundaries as exclusionary tools.

The Promise of Reconciliation: God's New Community
God loves diversity-"Glory be to God for dappled things," writes Gerard Manley Hopkins, celebrating variegated creation. The church's ultimate purpose is to fulfill God's plan "to unite all things in Jesus Christ," creating one complete organism that fully reflects God's image. Paul emphasizes in Ephesians that the primary evidence of this unification is the reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles. This new community must "bear with one another in love" and "maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" because they share one body, Spirit, Lord, faith, baptism, and one God who is "over all and through all and in all." This unity reflects the triune God's eternal, diverse, mutually loving community.
This new normal became necessary because sin turned ethnic identity into idolatry. Our ethnic identities must become subservient to our identity in Christ, not eliminated but properly ordered. Research shows many believers remain "trapped within the claims of their own ethnic or cultural community," making absolute what should be relative. Only Jesus can bear the weight of being at our center-our racial identities cannot. The Spirit doesn't remove diversity but enables us to love, understand and pursue one another within our diversity. Scripture's story is fundamentally about reunion-reversing the fractures and divisions caused by the fall.

Belonging Across Boundaries: Creating True Community
Creating genuine belonging in diverse churches requires addressing cultural differences that can hinder community. True belonging means being both a co-owner and co-creator of community, feeling welcomed, valued and comfortable.
The Colossian community Paul addressed was remarkably diverse-Greeks, Jews, circumcised, uncircumcised, barbarians, Scythians, slaves, and free people. In Christ's new way, these divisions are transformed: the poor can help the rich confront their idolatrous love of money. Paul grounds his commands in their new identity-they are "God's chosen ones, holy and beloved," language previously reserved for ethnic Israel. This identity shift was revolutionary, declaring that Greeks didn't need to become Jewish, barbarians weren't excluded for failing to conform. All stand before God equally chosen, not because they're special, but because God set his love upon them.
The compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness Paul prescribes are specifically needed during discord and controversy. Love binds everything together in perfect harmony, enabling believers to ache for others as they do for themselves.
Majority white denominations increasingly recognize their ethnic homogeneity as a hindrance to growth and sustainability. The Presbyterian Church in America's 2010 strategic plan identified "ethnic homogeneity" as an internal challenge, while Southern Baptist leaders acknowledge progress in racial reconciliation but admit "a long way to go" toward the kingdom's diversity.
The challenge is becoming "culturally accessible" embodiments of Jesus across differences-a messy process that often divides churches. The Westminster Confession describes "communion of saints" as Christians united in love, obligated to pursue each other's mutual good spiritually, emotionally, and materially. This communion doesn't diminish individual integrity but maintains unity in diversity. Unlike normal human unity based on mutual attraction, Christian love overcomes divisions and reconciles contraries, bringing into communion those who share nothing except that Christ gave himself for them.

"Devoting to the doctrine" means embracing unity in diversity as a gospel imperative, reflecting God's own triune nature. This theological foundation explains why Scripture consistently presents unity in diversity from Genesis to Revelation. The gospel isn't merely about personal salvation but includes the fullness of God's image expressed through redeemed humanity's diversity. Isaiah connects beauty to this gospel message: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news," announcing God's victory that accomplishes peace for fragmented humanity.
Devotion to doctrine means addressing systemic injustice, not just personal sin. Black Presbyterian ministers like Francis Grimke demonstrated this by pastoring for fifty years while helping form the NAACP and American Negro Academy. He declared, "I have always been ready to speak in behalf of the rights of the race." These ministers understood their confessional commitments' implications, contrasting with white evangelical churches that formed private schools to avoid desegregation. Black churches established schools as a "sixth commandment issue" to promote flourishing when civil authorities neglected Black children's needs.
Our doctrinal commitments should influence preaching, community life, and civic engagement. The church's power is ministerial and declarative, announcing God's Word to build up communities and pursue common good. This requires addressing both personal sin and systemic injustice that denies neighbors their dignity as image-bearers.

Our preference for sameness creates isolation-super zip codes where affluent separate from working class, and churches where 90% of congregations remain at least 90% same-race. This unconscious preference contradicts our stated values: highly educated whites who claim comfort with Black neighbors often live more segregated lives than less-educated whites. Culture shapes our identity by differentiating groups and maintaining sameness, yet Psalm 96 calls all nations to worship God in beautiful attire. Beautiful community requires crafting a new "we"-not erasing ethnicity but embracing a new collective identity.
Churches must probe their preferences because "minority fatigue" develops when ethnic minorities are the only ones adjusting. Two key actions can help: First, prayer-corporate heart examination is essential because we're often blind to how we maintain boundaries Christ destroyed. Second, get outside help-tools like the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) can reveal what churches can't see themselves. The IDI distinguishes between "objective culture" (visible artifacts) and "subjective culture" (underlying values and beliefs), measuring intercultural competence along a developmental continuum. Most people substantially overestimate their intercultural capability!
Cultivating beautiful community isn't cheap-it costs preferences. For majority-culture churches, counting the cost means experiencing minority leadership, being cautious about tokenistic hiring, and ensuring minority leaders have real authority rather than symbolic positions. Bringing someone on as an intern gives them little influence while bearing a heavy burden as minority representative. Instead, hire for positions with decision-making authority and help them connect with people sharing their culture.
Ethnic similarity emerged as crucial for belonging in diverse churches-minorities need representation either in congregation or leadership. Without similarity, differences become overwhelming. Minorities experience pressure of code switching and need spaces without that pressure. For minority-culture churches, the challenge stems from being safe havens for marginalized communities. Introducing diversity creates legitimate fear of losing identity, yet minority churches have valuable gifts to offer from their experience thriving despite marginalization. Beautiful community brings unavoidable dissonance, conflict and discomfort-it's not for the faint of heart.

The church must affirm the full humanity and royal dignity of all people, especially those society despises. Racial hierarchy impacts how people value themselves and others, and these challenges don't simply disappear by believing in Jesus together. Though pursuing kingdom diversity seems daunting, there's joy in the journey as we cultivate gratitude-vital for sustaining holy communities.
Beautiful community requires harmony-unity in diversity pointing to shalom. God isn't just making a new me, but a new we. Paul instructs the Colossians to "let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts" as arbitrator when tensions arise. This peace isn't something we manufacture but something we allow to govern our decisions. Sustaining this community requires daily gratitude, even when fellowship seems weak or difficult. As Bonhoeffer noted, complaining about community's imperfections hinders God from developing its richness in Christ.
Beautiful community accommodates scars while pursuing perfection through love. Paul instructs the Colossians to "let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom." This happens especially through corporate worship and singing together. Research participants emphasized how gratitude grew through authentic relationships in diverse churches. God's covenant commitment regularly involves food: from the elders of Israel eating in God's presence on Mount Sinai, to Isaiah's promise of "a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine," to John's vision of "the marriage supper of the Lamb." Research participants consistently mentioned eating together-particularly cross-cultural meals-as vital to belonging in diverse churches.
The Lord's Supper itself is a multinational, diverse, ethnicity-affirming meal preparing us for the wedding feast with people "from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages." This vision enables us to resist polarization and celebrate that the triune God refused to turn away from our darkness, sending His Son to restore communion with God and each other. In this way, our pursuit of beautiful community isn't just a social program but a foretaste of the eternal feast where all God's children will sit together at his table, finally and fully reflecting his beautiful image.
