Currently, knowledge projects launched in the periphery have low connectivity among themselves-for example, the gap between African Renaissance debates and Latin American discussions of regional identity, despite common issues. Similar disconnects exist between Asian postcolonial theory and Middle Eastern social criticism, even when addressing parallel concerns about modernity and tradition. We can reshape how knowledge circulates by modifying the metropolitan focus and building lateral links across the periphery through initiatives like South-South research networks and multilingual publishing platforms. Social science serves democracy in four key ways: through compassion, by circulating knowledge of experiences beyond global elites; through critique, challenging governmental and corporate distortions; by producing knowledge democratic movements need about power structures; and by contesting privileged control of knowledge itself. Each function requires both theoretical sophistication and practical engagement - for instance, ethnographic work that amplifies marginalized voices while critically analyzing systems of exclusion. The path forward requires what the author calls "dirty theory" - theorizing mixed with specific situations rather than abstract universals.
