Mechanization and steam power dramatically increased productivity. Between 1820-1850, workers' real earnings rose by almost 100% despite population growth of a third. By 1900, extreme poverty in England had been reduced by three-quarters to around 10%. Since 1820, per capita GDP in the Western world has increased more than fifteen-fold.
The United Nations Development Programme describes humanity's rise from poverty in two phases. The first "Great Ascent" began with the Industrial Revolution and was nearly complete by the 1950s when extreme poverty was largely eradicated in Western Europe. The second Great Ascent began in East Asia, with countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore integrating into the global economy, proving development was possible for "developing countries." The movement accelerated when China and India opened their economies in 1979 and 1991 respectively.
China's economic miracle began in the early 1980s when the Communist Party created special economic zones in Guangdong province, exempting them from command economy rules. These zones combined investments from Hong Kong and Taiwan with workers from northern provinces to produce goods for Western markets. The result was astonishing: extreme poverty fell from nearly 90% in 1981 to just 10% today.
India followed China's example when a 1991 economic crisis forced Finance Minister Manmohan Singh to dismantle the protectionism and planned economy that had kept India poor since independence. License requirements were removed, tariff barriers reduced, and Indians gained more freedom to start businesses. The average violent death rate in non-state societies was 524 per 100,000 annually, compared to just 60 per 100,000 when including all 20th century wars and genocides. Early agricultural civilizations reduced violence fivefold. By the 13th-15th centuries, European homicide rates dropped to 30-40 per 100,000, though still 30-40 times higher than today. The decline accelerated in the early modern era, falling to 19 per 100,000 in the 16th century, 11 in the 17th century, 3.2 in the 18th century, and around 1 today.
This pacification process included several key developments: centralized judicial systems and governments turned medieval warlords into courtiers; modern police forces restrained the violent; and the rise of moral individualism through Protestantism and the Enlightenment shifted responsibility for crimes from families to individuals. A culture of honor slowly gave way to a culture of dignity, with emotional control becoming more valued than readiness to fight.
Despite the 20th century's devastating world wars, historical perspective reveals our era may be the least violent in history. Proportionally, earlier conflicts were often more devastating - the 13th century Mongol invasions killed one-eighth of humanity, five times worse than World War II relative to population.
For over a millennium, Europe averaged two new conflicts between countries every year. The Enlightenment changed attitudes toward war - previously seen as natural and honorable, it became something to avoid. Commerce made peaceful trade more profitable than conquest. Great Powers, once at war 75-100% of the time in the 16th-17th centuries, have seen steadily declining conflict, with none fighting each other since the Korean War.
Though armed conflicts continue, they've become significantly less lethal - the average interstate war killed 86,000 in the 1950s but only about 3,000 today. Modern warfare shows increased concern for civilian casualties, with Afghanistan seeing 5,300 civilian deaths (2004-2010) compared to Vietnam's 800,000. Genocide, though not eliminated, is now universally condemned with UN members committed to stopping it.
While terrorism has increased five-fold since 2000, it remains statistically insignificant compared to other causes of death, with most attacks concentrated in conflict zones. Studies show terrorist groups fail 94% of the time to achieve their goals, typically lasting only eight years. Peace between democracies has become the norm, with economic interdependence creating a "liberal peace" where disputes are resolved diplomatically rather than violently.

French thinkers like Diderot wrote that slavery "violates religion, morality, natural law, and all human rights," while Voltaire challenged racial justifications for slavery.
In America, abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison published anti-slavery papers despite threats and violence, while the "underground railroad" helped slaves escape to freedom.
