While bourbon struggled through the 1970s, Maker's Mark defied industry trends. Founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. after his family's T.W. Samuels Distillery failed post-Prohibition, Maker's took a contrarian approach. When others slashed prices, Maker's raised them.
