While the Bloomsbury Group provided Woolf with intellectual companionship, she still struggled with balancing sociability and creative solitude, writing that "incessant company is as bad as solitary confinement." Her diaries reveal how time itself shapes the experience of loneliness-moments alone could feel either liberating or terrifying as she fought to prevent time from "flapping round" her. Despite her mental illness, Woolf recognized that masterpieces aren't "single and solitary births" but emerge from "thinking in common," suggesting loneliness paradoxically connects writers to collective experience. Loneliness isn't universal or ahistorical but emerged from specific socio-political and economic choices. Various forms of competitive Social Darwinism have been naturalized into every aspect of human experience-from education to dating to economics-creating an internalized framework where competition and self-interest feel inevitable. This individualistic framework supports neoliberalism, which emerged from nineteenth-century economic liberalism that prioritized free markets over social responsibility. The creation of loneliness as a modern emotional state coincided with debates about state obligations, economic independence, and personal authority in the absence of higher powers. When evolutionary ideals were used to defend self-aggrandizing policies, personal autonomy and individual greed became assets rather than liabilities. The UK government's creation of a Minister for Loneliness while simultaneously stripping community assets like libraries and social care reveals the contradiction in current approaches. Elderly people with strong social connections don't report loneliness, while those with "unmet needs" as basic as being washed or fed do-factors directly within governmental control. Similarly, homelessness continues to rise under neoliberal policies, along with its emotional and social deprivation. To reframe loneliness in the neoliberal age, we must first recognize the political and economic structures that historically created it. Second, we must understand that loneliness means different things to different people and has significant connections to solitude. Third, we should stop treating loneliness as a clearly defined entity - it's fluid, mutating across a person's biography, sometimes fleeting, sometimes chronic, linked to both isolation and sociability. More comparative research is needed into loneliness across different cultures and biographical stages. The language we use matters - framing loneliness as an "epidemic" creates moral panic and encourages its spread. This contagion metaphor is culturally seductive but politically problematic, similar to how immigration is depicted as an overwhelming disease. Such language invites panic and knee-jerk responses rather than thoughtful consideration of what loneliness means and when it might be beneficial. The medicalization of loneliness has culminated in neuroscientists developing a "loneliness pill" - though this actually targets the distressing emotional symptoms that prevent social reconnection rather than loneliness itself. This approach stems from a neurocentric view of loneliness as primarily an emotional state, whereas this book argues that understandings of the brain as the emotion center are historical products, and loneliness has physical, embodied experiences suggesting bodily responses. Loneliness isn't always negative - it can be beneficial and creative when sought and claimed as a means for reflection. It can provide a pathway to understanding oneself and others. The distinction lies between positive "oneliness" sought for emotional clarity versus destructive, existential loneliness that creates a sense of lack. An effective response to loneliness must be grounded in a historically informed understanding of this difference.
