Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian whose dramas explored fate, moral conflict, political authority, and human suffering. Best known for Oedipus Rex, Antigone, and Electra, he became one of classical Athens’ most celebrated playwrights; over 120 plays were attributed to him, though only seven survive complete.
Sophocles was born around 496 BCE in Colonus, just outside Athens, into a prosperous family; his father, Sophillus, is usually described as a well-off manufacturer. He came of age during the rise of classical Athens and appears to have received the kind of elite education that joined music, poetry, dance, and physical training. Ancient tradition holds that, after the Greek victory at Salamis in 480 BCE, the young Sophocles was chosen to lead a celebratory chorus, an early sign of public promise. That combination of artistic training and civic visibility shaped a career that would unfold at the center of Athenian religious and political life.
