Euripides was an ancient Athenian tragedian whose plays explored human psychology, passion, war, and the tensions between divine power and social order. Best known for Medea, Hippolytus, and The Bacchae, he wrote about ninety plays, of which eighteen or nineteen survive, making him one of Greek tragedy’s most influential dramatists.
Euripides was born around 480 BCE, probably on Salamis or in nearby Attica, at the moment classical Athens was defining itself in the aftermath of the Persian Wars. Ancient testimony about his family and education is uneven, but he appears to have come of age within a city increasingly shaped by rhetoric, philosophy, and democratic argument. Unlike Aeschylus, whose drama often emphasized heroic scale, or Sophocles, whose tragedies are marked by formal balance, Euripides developed a sharper interest in ambiguity, private motive, and emotional contradiction. Ancient tradition also presents him as unusually bookish and somewhat solitary, a fitting image for a playwright so attentive to thought as well as action.
