Grady Hendrix is an American author whose work centers on horror, dark comedy, and pop-culture-inflected suspense. He is best known for novels including Horrorstör, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, and How to Sell a Haunted House. His nonfiction book Paperbacks from Hell won the Bram Stoker Award.
Grady Hendrix grew up in the Charleston, South Carolina, area, the youngest of four children in a family that valued books, storytelling, and sharp conversational timing. At Porter-Gaud he was drawn to theater, then spent a year at Bennington College before transferring to New York University, where he studied sound engineering and philosophy, became deeply interested in Asian cinema, and met his future wife, chef Amanda Cohen. After periods in Hong Kong and Los Angeles, he returned to New York, helped found the New York Asian Film Festival, and also worked at the American Society for Psychical Research, an experience that fed his long interest in how ordinary people talk about fear, ghosts, and the unexplained.
