Explore the origins of the UK trade union movement and the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, from secret oaths in 1834 to the fight for modern labor rights.

It showed, for the first time, that the 'power of the many' could actually blink the 'power of the state.' It wasn't just about money; it was about the fundamental right to exist as a collective.
Explore the rise of the trade union movement in the UK, from its Industrial Revolution origins through the Thatcher era and modern strikes, to its relevance in today's world with the gig economy and future of work.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs were six farm laborers from the village of Tolpuddle who, in 1834, were sentenced to seven years of hard labor in Australia. Their crime was not violence, but rather forming a group and taking a secret oath to demand better pay. They are significant in British labor history because their harsh treatment sparked a massive public outcry, eventually leading to their pardon and demonstrating the early power of collective action against state repression.
The UK trade union movement began in an era of intense state repression where workers' attempts to organize were treated as criminal conspiracies. Early efforts, like those in Tolpuddle, were met with the use of obscure laws against illegal oaths to prevent workers from 'combining.' This movement was founded on the fundamental right to exist as a collective, eventually securing the labor rights we recognize today, such as the minimum wage and the standard weekend.
Although the six men were originally sentenced to seven years of hard labor in Australia for their involvement in early trade unionism, they did not serve the full term. The public response to their sentencing was so significant that the government was forced to blink. The martyrs were eventually pardoned and brought back home to England just a few years later, marking a pivotal victory for the power of the many over the power of the state.
