This silence does not create true peace; instead, it accumulates debt that eventually impacts the health and longevity of the partnership.

    This discrepancy is often due to a neurobiological mismatch between contractual and intimate domains. While you may feel powerful and assertive in a professional setting, romantic relationships activate your attachment system, which is wired for survival. Research indicates that individuals with anxious or fearful attachment histories experience much higher threat reactivity in intimate contexts, causing the brain to feel physiological panic during minor disagreements with a spouse.

    The fawn response is a biological survival strategy where your nervous system decides the safest move is to become whatever the other person needs you to be. It is a physiological reaction often rooted in the desire not to rock the boat. When you prioritize being easygoing over expressing your true needs, your nervous system is choosing a fawning behavior to ensure safety within your attachment system, even if it leads to relational debt.
