    Дыхания (или «дамэ») — это свободные соседние точки на пересечении линий вокруг камня. У камня в центре доски их четыре, на краю — три, а в углу — всего два. Если противник занимает все точки дыхания вашего камня или группы, они «задыхаются», снимаются с доски и становятся пленниками. Поскольку противник может ходить только один раз за ход, он не способен лишить группу обоих дыханий сразу, что делает такую крепость вечной.

    Правило Ко — это запрет на немедленное повторение позиции, который предотвращает бесконечные циклы в игре. Если один игрок берет камень противника в ситуации Ко, другой не имеет права сразу же взять его в ответ, так как это вернет доску в идентичное состояние. Игроку необходимо сделать ход в другом месте (создать Ко-угрозу), вынудив оппонента ответить, и только после изменения общей ситуации на доске он получает право вернуться к борьбе в узле Ко.

    Это вопрос стратегической эффективности и экономии ресурсов. Для захвата определенного объема территории в углу требуется меньше камней, так как две стороны «забора» игроку предоставляет сама кромка доски. На стороне доски камней потребуется больше, а в центре — максимальное количество, так как строить ограждение нужно со всех четырех сторон. Поэтому мастера следуют иерархии: сначала углы, затем стороны, и только в последнюю очередь — центр.
